So here is the question.... when a company is facing growth, efficiency or any organizational change they always turn to training to address the problem. Why then is the training budget the first thing to be cut when an organization faces budget constraints?
The concept of a pre assessment to gauge the knowledge and skill level of the learner prior to the course being conducted has been around for many years. For the instructor, a pre assessment reviews the current level of understanding of the topic prior to the intervention. It identifies if a student needs to take the course or if there is a disparity in participant’s prior knowledge and skill. The pre assessment helps the facilitator to understand the makeup of the class they are about to teach and allows for the opportunity to change the course (or students in the course) based on the findings. In other words, a pre assessment helps engineer a course to best meet the current need.
What is little less known is research has shown conducting a pre assessment creates a positive influence on gaining the student’s buy-in to the course materials. Students who participate in a pre assessment are more likely to engage in the learning and absorb the material presented. As it turns out, knowing the material to be covered ahead of time and understanding their knowledge was “benchmarked” helps the learner to actively engage in the objectives for the course. The pre assessments help intellectually and emotionally prepare the learner for the course. When a program is then followed by a post test the learner is actively engaged in the knowledge/skill gain during the course. The pre assessment followed by a post assessment and then a transfer (on the job) assessment sets the stage for the learner to be enthusiastic to participate in the learning of the material and the application of the material from its inception through its use on the job.
We have the tools necessary to bring the learners into being an active participant in learning. The ultimate desire is to have learning adopted and improvements to the organization made due to the learning intervention. A pre assessment is a key to motivating students to become an active participant in the learning process and it is a primary tool to help training professionals show real value as a benchmark for growth in an organization.
